Student Run Programs
America Reads Challenge Program
Connecticut College created a component of this national literacy program. The main goal of the program is for all elementary school students to be able to read at grade level. Connecticut College partners with the New London Edgerton and Winthrop Elementary Schools to implement the program. Connecticut College students complete a reading training program and are matched with classroom teachers. Conn students assist as teacher aides, provide one-to-one tutoring and teach small groups. They also read to children to foster a love of reading and build literacy skills. Students can participate through Federal Work Study or as a volunteer. The America Reads Challenge Tutor Coordinators work closely with an OVCS staff member to oversee, recruit, train, and place ARC tutors in the classrooms.
