Economics, Development & Social Justice

Alderhouse Residential Communities - provides affordable housing for individuals, families and special populations such as the elderly and artists serving SE CT.

Citizens Bank - supports special projects that incorporate banking and the community. See Tracee Reiser for information if you have a general idea of what you want to do at this Bank.

Community Foundation - locates donors to promote betterment of Southeastern Connecticut.  The Foundation encourages local philanthropy and is able to award grants and scholarships with a permanent endowment for the community.

Eastern CT Housing Opportunities (ECHO) - strategically acquires properties to build / renovate housing within target neighborhoods.

Habitat for Humanity - an international nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization that welcomes all people to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter.  CC students join teams of community volunteers to assist in the building process.

Junior Achievement of Southwest New England - utilizes community and business volunteers, as well as CC students, to teach New London students about business and economics.

Main Street Program - a grassroots community revitalization program in which CC students assist with research and clean-up projects that focus on the downtown areas of the city.

Organized Dedicated to Make Trade Fair - a CC student-run group that organizes campus wide activities to educate and share information about Fair Trade.

New London Development Corporation - a non-profit organization established to increase the tax base of New London and expand economic opportunity. Internships include research projects related to all aspects of the Corporation’s development projects.

New London Housing Authority - students complete a variety of office based projects in the accounting, maintenance and leasing / property management departments.

New London Main Street - revitalizes New London’s downtown area. Students are requested for the positions of volunteer coordinator and trolley coordinator. Main Street is also in need of a student who can interview applicants and draft a newsletter.

New London Office of Development & Planning - a municipal department in the City of New London, in which students complete research and assist with the development and planning of the Waterfront Park. Students also help to develop the fair housing program.

New London Walkway VISTA Project - a collaboration with the Trails and Rails Action Coalition of the Sierra Club, CC, the Coast Guard Academy, and the City of New London.The goal of the project is to create a walking / bike path from the Science Center into downtown New London. Students help with research, design, and development.

Opportunity Industrialization Center (OIC) - along with providing food service and basic education, the training center provides adults with assistance in developing different job and computer skills.  CC students complete research on welfare and job issues while assisting with both teaching and operations.

Seabird Enterprises - provides sheltered employment opportunities for the mentally retarded. CC students have helped to complete job satisfaction interview surveys with clients.

Shiloh Family Life Center - a local development organization that offers housing, counseling services, individual development accounts, recreational activities and mentoring to families and individuals in New London.

The Day - collaborates with Connecticut College and the New London Development Corporation (NLDC) to survey New London residents.  Results of the survey are then analyzed with the assistance of Professor Peppard of the Economics Department.

Trails & Rails Action Coalition - a citizen-based organization that is working to secure a rail system to be converted to a trail for recreational use.

Volunteers in Community Service - assists individuals of all ages who reside in New London County in locating challenging, meaningful volunteer assignments in nonprofit agencies and organizations.

York Correctional Institution - a women's correctional facility where students assist with group work and provide educational assistance.
