Work Study Positions

Work Study In 1999 the United States Congress mandated that all colleges and universities that receive federal work-study dollars allocate at least 7% of their allocation to students who are working in community service areas. While Connecticut College has always implemented this 7% allocation, during the 2001-2002 academic year, the community service work-study allocation was 12%.

Work Study Work-study students typically apply for OVCS student program coordinator positions during the spring semester for the following academic year. Many students apply for community intern positions - a position at partner organizations - during the first few weeks of each semester. During 2003-2004 OVCS recruited, hired, trained and placed 132 work-study students who coordinated programs, recruited volunteers, assisted with program development and facilitated transportation. In addition, some of those students worked at community sites including the Science EpiCenter & DNA Learning Center, Community Health Center, Office of Development and Planning, Women's Center, Alliance for Living, Mystic Aquarium, ISAAC school, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, New London Public Schools, A Moveable Feast, and the Multicultural Resource Center. OVCS student payroll from the federal allocation, including the special allocation for America Reads Challenge tutors was approximately $46,000.

In addition, OVCS student payroll includes a special $10,000 grant from CICS for Connecticut College students who are residents of Connecticut and engaged in service and over $5,000 in special grants obtained from foundations for student wages.
