Foreign Language Requirements

FAQ - Foreign Language Requirements

Q: Is there a foreign language requirement?

Every student must complete at least one semester of an intermediate course in a language he or she has already studied or one year of a new language at the elementary level (101 and 102). Students who have taken a year or more of a language in high school may not repeat that language at the elementary level.

Q: What if I can't take a foreign language because of a learning disability?

You must be registered with the Office of Student Disability Services (OSDS) and must have provided appropriate documentation of a disability that prevents you from learning a foreign language as it is taught at the college. Once you have done that, you must fill out a petition to the Committee on Academic Standing. The petition must be signed by the Director of Student Disability Services, your faculty adviser and your dean. Petitions are available in your dean's office or in the Office of Records and Registration, located on the first floor of Fanning Hall.
