3.  HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION:

 

This mixture has not been tested as a whole potential health effects

 

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW:  Methanol may cause blindness/death if ingested.

 

EYE CONTACT:  Eye irritant upon direct contact.

 

SKIN CONTACT:  May cause skin irritation upon prolonged contact.

 

INGESTION:  possible Alcoholic breathe, exhilaration followed by CNS depression, slurred speech,  convulsions and

                        hypoglycemia.

 

INHALATION:  Not known.

4.  FIRST AID MEASURES:

 

EYE CONTACT:   Flush eye with large amounts of warm water for 15 minutes.  If irritation persists, contact poison                          center or doctor.

 

SKIN CONTACT:   Remove and isolate contaminated clothing.  Flush exposed area with warm water for 15 minutes.   If irritation persists, contact poison center or doctor.

 

INGESTION:   Drink sips of warm water or milk.  If symptoms persist, contact poison center or doctor.

 

INHALATION:   Remove to fresh air and take slow deep breaths.  Drink some sips of water.  If coughing persists, contact poison center or doctor.

5.  FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES:

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES:   No known toxic combustion products or special fire fighting hazards.  Self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing should be worn when fighting chemical fires.  Do not use high pressure stream of water to extinguish burning  material.

 

UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD:   Closed cans exposed to flame and heat may erupt, scattering fragments.

6.  ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES:

 

Small spills:   Remove all sources of ignition.  Provide adequate ventilation.  Absorb on vermiculite, paper or other absorbent.  Flush area with water.

7.  HANDLING AND STORAGE:

 

 

STORAGE:  Store in a cool dry place. (40 - 125 degrees F).  Provide adequate ventilation in area of use. Store away from sources of heat or open flame.

 

HANDLING:  Never attempt to convert solid-fuel units to liquid use by adding absorbent material to the fuel receptacle.  Use only solid STERNO CANNED HEAT in open cup burners.  DIRECTIONS:  (1) Extinguish flame audit snuffer.  (2) Remove burner from heat stand, place in sink or on sink top(spilled fuel may harm some furniture finishes).  (3) Lift flip-top spout.  (4) Gently squeeze inverted container, squirting fuel into fuel reservoir until saturated.  Do not overfill.  (5) Pour off excess fuel by inverting burner over sink.  (6) Wipe exterior of burner to remove any spilled fuel.  (7) Replace burner unit in heat stand before igniting.  (8) Never atempt to refill while burning - always extinguish flame first with snuffer.  Do not rely on eyesight-pale blue flame is often invisible in normal room lighting.  (9) Always apply fuel through flip-top spout.  Never remove cap from bottle to fill burner-a serious fire could result.

8.  EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION:

 

GENERAL CONTROLS:   Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

 

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:   The use of eye protection (goggles) and rubber gloves is recommended.

 

RESPIRATORS:   Not required.

 

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:   Keep out of the reach of children.

 

PRECAUTIONARY LABELING:   Front Label:  For use only in units designed to burn liquid fuel-those with wick or   non-flammable absorbent material in fuel reservoir.  Caution:  Flammable mixture.  Do not use near flame or fire.  EYE IRRITANT- HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED.  Keep away from children.  IMPORTANT:  Read all directions and cautions on back label before using product.  Misuse may result in flash fire or severe burns.  Back Label:  CAUTION:  Eye irritant-Harmful if swallowed.  If splashed in eye, flush thoroughly with water.  If swallowed, give large quntities of water or milk.  Consult physician.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION:

 

AQUATIC FATE:  When released into water, ethanol will volatilize(estimated half life is 6 days) and biodegrade.  It will not sorb to sediment or bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms.  Although it readily biodegrades in laboratory tests, no data on its rate of degration in natural waters could be found.

Any disposal practice must be in compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations (contact local or state environmental agency for specific rules).  Do not dump into sewers, any body of water or onto the ground.

OSHA:   This product is considered hazardous under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR     1900.1200).

 

RCRA (40 CFR 261, Subpart D):   None of the OSHA regulated components in this product are listed as hazardous wastes under 40 CFR 261 (Subpart D).  This product is considered a hazardous waste based on ignitability.

 

CLEAN WATER ACT:   None of the OSHA regulated components in this product are Section 311 listed chemicals.

 

SARA:   Sections 301-304 (Threshold planning quantity - TPQ) 40 CFR 355:  No TPQ for any OSHA regulated  component. Section 313 (Toxic chemical release reporting) 40 CFR 372:  The following chemicals must be            reported under SARA 313:  Not applicable to any OSHA regulated component.

 

CERCLA:   Section 102 (Reportable Quantity - RQ) 40 CFR 302:  The RQ for Methyl Alcohol is 5000 lbs.  Releases  greater than or equal  to this amount must be reported to the National Response Center (NCR)  immediately:  800-424-8802.
