OVCS and Community Action
OVCS works to advance student development while working in partnership with the local community to build a healthier and more just society. Creating active and effective citizens who work well within diverse environments is a central mission of the liberal arts education.
Over 500 Connecticut College students participate in the OVCS community action and volunteer placements linking their education to personal and professional or experiencial interests.
Through the OVCS programs, students develop frameworks for systems analysis and build a range of organizational and problem solving skills. Our students work each year in organizations, agencies and institutions in the economically and racially diverse city of New London. They engage in vital issues addressing education, economic and community development, culture and health challenges.
OVCS is part of the area within the Dean of Multicultural Affairs in the office of the Dean of the College Community. It is also connected to the Dean of the Faculty through academic community learning courses which are courses in many College departments were, as part of coursework, students complete assingments in community sites such as clinics, schools, museums, municipal departments, and human service agencies.
