Manager of Sustainability

Josh Stoffel joins Connecticut College as its first Manager of Sustainability to support the campus-wide integration of sustainability efforts initiated by the former Environmental Coordinator, Amy Cabaniss. Josh will help Connecticut College continue to be a leader in campus sustainability by coordinating and advancing energy conservation and efficiency, renewable energy, waste minimization, student and community engagement, curriculum development and other sustainability projects.

Josh Stoffel comes to Connecticut College from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where, as its first Sustainability Coordinator for two years, he built the foundation for the campus-wide sustainability initiative that exists today. While at UMass Amherst, Josh co-chaired the institution’s Sustainability Committee, co-authored a master’s degree in sustainability science, coordinated millions of dollars in energy efficiency work and created comprehensive sustainability internship and Eco-Rep programs for undergraduate students.

In addition to Josh’s efforts at University of Massachusetts, he has most recently worked for a sustainability solutions firm called GreenerU, through which he supported the efforts of a wide variety of colleges and universities striving to achieve their campus sustainability goals.

Josh holds a Master of Higher Education Administration degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a special concentration in integrating sustainability practices into higher education. His master’s research focused on successful methods of incorporating sustainability practices at all levels of a college or university structure. He also holds a Bachelor of Environmental Sciences degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, through which his honors thesis focused on the establishment of effective and long-lasting student engagement program structures.

Josh’s professional affiliations include the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), in which he has been an active member. Josh has presented at a variety of conferences including the AASHE National 2010 Conference, the Northeast Society of College and University Planners (SCUP) Regional 2011 Conference and the Northeast APPA 2010 Conference.
