Dear Staff and Faculty,

I'm writing this morning to call your attention to an email I sent to students about a new transportation service we are offering them through the Camel Ride by Lyft Program. This program offers a more convenient way for students to travel locally off-campus and replaces the Camel Van service we offered in the past. Students will be able to order rides on demand rather than waiting for the Camel Van to complete its route. As a result, it eliminates the need to have a large van unnecessarily driving a predetermined loop without passengers.  I hope that this information is helpful to you as you support and advise our students in the months and years ahead.

Sincerely,

Announcing New Camel Ride by Lyft Program

Dear Students,

Over the past several months we have been evaluating options to support students traveling to local locations in New London and Waterford. We are excited to announce that we have partnered with Lyft to provide you with a new transportation option that offers improved, reliable transportation to the locations previously served by the Camel Van Shuttle Service. This partnership with Lyft replaces the Camel Van.

Given COVID-19 and our current Modified Alert Level 1-Green status indicating that you should only leave campus for essential reasons, this program will commence with a more limited set of destinations.

Beginning Oct. 22, you will receive four rides (two roundtrips) free per month up to $12 each that will be accessible directly through the Lyft app after opting into the Camel Ride by Lyft Program. COVID-19 expectations allow you to travel in a Lyft vehicle with one other passenger, and you can share a free ride with another passenger. For example, in a given month if you run out of rides you can travel with a friend on their rides.

These rides will allow you to travel on-demand between campus (from the former Camel Van pick-up location between Smith and Branford Houses) and the following locations seven days/week between 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.:

  • New London Train Station
  • New London Mall—ShopRite (market and pharmacy), Marshalls and other stores
  • Target

When COVID-19 levels in New London County improve we will expand the list of destinations.

The ride credits will renew automatically in your Lyft app on a recurring monthly basis.

HOW TO SIGN UP: If you are on campus this semester, please be on the lookout for an email invitation from Lyft. You will receive this email on Thursday, Oct. 22. Simply follow the steps in the email to join the program to receive the free rides each month to the eligible locations.

Program Details:

  • Four free rides per month up to $12 per ride
  • Available 7 days/week 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Valid on Standard Lyft rides only
  • Limited to destinations identified by the College

The College will continue to provide roundtrip transportation, at no cost to you, to get to Hartford HealthCare GoHealth Urgent Care when Student Health Services is closed or if you are referred by Student Health Services. This service will now be expanded to include transportation to and/or from L&M Hospital. Over the course of the next couple of weeks we will be transitioning from Uber to Lyft for this service. These rides are scheduled by Campus Safety and do not count toward your four free rides a month through Camel Ride by Lyft. Contact Campus Safety (860-439-2222) to access free transportation to these health care locations.

We hope that Camel Ride by Lyft better serves your need to access resources and opportunities in the community. Please remember that, at the moment, you should only be leaving campus for essential reasons. Hopefully, the COVID-19 levels will soon improve in our region so that we can more fully implement this new transportation service with expanded destinations.
