Message for faculty and staff about retrieving belongings

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Last Friday, Governor Lamont issued his latest executive order requiring all citizens to “Stay Safe, Stay Home.” The order goes into effect tonight at 8 p.m. As a result, we are doing everything we can to limit traffic in and out of campus after today, except for critical employees, to preserve the health and safety of our community.

We recognize that some of you may have important materials or equipment that you need for teaching or working remotely and urge you to come to campus to retrieve these items by the close of business Tuesday, March 24. Please do not come to Conn unless it is absolutely necessary. If you do need to come for duties essential to supporting remote instruction or the maintenance of lab cultures and research equipment, please stay for a limited period of time.

Effective immediately, we will be putting in place a new check-in, check-out protocol for faculty and staff to access the campus. When you arrive at the gatehouse, a Campus Safety officer will record your name, department, arrival time, and the specific building you will be entering. Your departure time will also be recorded when you leave. You may either loop around the gatehouse to notify the officer in person that you are leaving or call the gatehouse at 860-439-2222 as you exit. Please be sure to bring your College ID (Camel Card) to show the Campus Safety officer on duty. Faculty and staff who live on campus are exempt from this new process but must still present their ID to the officer upon arriving at the gatehouse.

If you come to campus for a brief period, we ask that you refrain from unnecessarily touching any doors, walls, phones, computers, equipment or other surfaces when retrieving your belongings to help prevent any potential spread of COVID-19. The virus has been known to remain viable on surfaces, including cardboard and other materials, for up to three days. You may also wish to bring cleaning wipes and/or wear gloves to help keep areas that you are touching as clean as possible for those who may go into those spaces after you leave.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we work together to keep our community safe, healthy and strong.

Sincerely,

Victor Arcelus, Dean of Students
Jeff Cole, Dean of the Faculty
Rich Madonna, Vice President for Finance and Administration
