Student Message About Vaccine Boosters Clinics and COVID-19 Updates

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Below is the student version of the message I sent to you this evening about the upcoming booster clinics. It also includes updates on campus policies given our low levels of COVID-19 on campus.

Sincerely,

Victor Arcelus
Dean of Students

Dear Students,

We are working with Hartford HealthCare to host two vaccine booster clinics in November: Saturday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 13 (more details to come). In preparation for the vaccine booster clinics, we need all students to complete a very brief survey. Please complete this survey as soon as possible, no later than Sunday, Oct. 31.

All students are asked to complete the survey even if you do not want to get a vaccine booster at this time or have already received a booster.

Student Vaccine Booster Survey

The vaccine booster is not currently required by the College. All students and employees are eligible to receive a vaccine booster if you had your second shot of Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna at least six months ago or the Johnson & Johnson single shot at least two months ago. If you received a different vaccine please consult with your medical provider or Student Health Services. Information about the vaccine boosters is available at the CDC website

In addition, I have three COVID-19 campus operations updates given our current low levels of COVID-19 on campus and declining COVID-19 levels in the region. If the current conditions change we may need to return to previous protocols and operations:

  • Jane Addams Dining now has indoor seating available.

  • With the cold weather coming and people moving indoors for athletic activity we are adjusting our mask wearing expectations in large indoor spaces that include Dayton Arena, Luce Field House (blue courts), and the wood court gym.

    • In these spaces, masks do not need to be worn while engaged in athletic activity. For athletic practices, competition, and recreation, masks are still expected when entering or leaving these spaces, when on the sidelines, and in locker rooms.

    • Additional adjustments may be in place for specific sports for safety reasons. Coaches will be in touch with varsity teams and the Office of Student Engagement will be in touch with club teams about mask expectations for specific athletic activities.

    • Masks must still be worn in the Higdon Fitness Center and the strength and conditioning room.

    • Spectators attending events in all spaces within the Athletic Center must still wear a mask.

  • Residence hall room capacities can return to normal pre-COVID expectations that are based on fire safety and other capacity related safety factors such as building design:

    • Singles, doubles, triples, quads, and apartments other than Ridges and Winchesters can have up to 10 people.

    • River Ridge apartments and Winchester houses may have up to 25 people in the apartment/house. Any gathering with more than 19 people and involving alcohol must be pre-approved in accordance with the Social Functions policy. Social host training is offered by the Office of Wellbeing and Health Promotion. As noted in an earlier message, social host training includes information on new guidelines that allow for gatherings to be held outside of River Ridge apartments and Winchester houses.

    • Residence hall common room capacity is based on capacity guidelines noted in each room. Social gatherings without alcohol may take place in all common rooms. Gatherings with alcohol can take place in select common rooms (as noted in the student handbook)--host(s) need to follow the Social Functions policy and be social host trained.

Please remember that masks continue to be required in residence halls when outside of your own room and if you are in your room with peers who do not live with you.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the vaccine booster survey. I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Victor Arcelus
