Student Charges and Financial Aid

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We write to share with you a letter that was sent today regarding fall 2020 student bills and financial aid. We will be adjusting billing for room and board and the student activity fee for students living off campus or studying remotely as outlined below. Dear Students,

We hope you are safe and well and getting ready for a fall semester like no other. We look forward to seeing you and are writing to let you know that, later this week, you will receive an invoice for your fall semester charges.

Faculty and staff have been working throughout the summer to provide the full range of educational opportunities you have come to expect from Connecticut College. Classes will be offered either in-person or in a remote or hybrid format, delivered at the highest level from faculty and staff who have been honing their skills to make their teaching effective in every mode possible. Our exceptional academic, career and other support services will continue to be available to all enrolled students. For these reasons, your tuition charge will be the same whether you are taking classes remotely or in residence. We are planning a vibrant fall semester of programs, activities and events to keep you engaged and involved safely with each other and with your faculty and staff.

In the letter you received last week from Deans Arcelus, McKnight and Singer, you heard about the extensive measures the College is taking—including the rigorous testing protocol we are putting in place—to support as safe a return to campus as possible this fall. We have redesigned classroom spaces and enhanced classroom technology to provide a high-quality learning experience. We have also increased our financial aid budget to support families whose circumstances have changed because of the pandemic.

Adjustments to Charges
The bill you will receive was calculated on the assumption that you would be living on campus this fall. We know some of you have made or are making other plans, so your bill will be adjusted for the following three circumstances: (1) If you have been given permission to live off campus (commuting from home or renting) while planning to come to campus for classes and other activities and meetings, you will receive a credit to your account for fall room and board. (2) If you are enrolled in remote classes and not coming to campus at all, in addition to room and board, you will receive another credit to your account for the student activity fee. (3) If you elect to enroll as a part-time remote student at Conn for the fall semester and take just two Connecticut College courses, as discussed in the recent letter from Deans Arcelus, McKnight and Singer, your tuition will be adjusted and room and board and student activity fee credits will be applied. You may contact your class dean to learn more about part-time remote status, which we are making available to students for the first time this year.

Financial Aid Awards
Financial aid awards were calculated on the same assumption that you would be in residence for 2020-21, and so they, too, will be reviewed. Once your enrollment status has been confirmed, the Office of Financial Aid will be revising packages for those of you who have chosen to commute or study off campus (either full or part-time). Packages will, as usual, include an allowance for living and personal expenses, as well as books and supplies.

Finally, if you decide to take a leave of absence or defer your enrollment for a semester, please know that this will not affect the grant portion of your award from Connecticut College. You are eligible to receive up to eight semesters of grants from Conn. If you have taken out any educational loans, however, you should contact the Office of Financial Aid to inquire how a leave or deferral might impact your loan status during your time away. Please also be advised that, if you ultimately decide not to matriculate, and want to receive a full refund for any payments already made to cover the cost of attendance, you must let us know before the first day of classes on Sept. 1. Please contact your class dean to let them know of your change in plans.
