The Dining Services team has been working on myriad details to prepare for the new academic year. For those of you coming to campus, we are writing to provide important updates about dining and how it will operate this fall. Our plan is based on guidance from medical professionals, local and state public health officials, and other colleges and universities.
We will be implementing a phased approach to dining in the fall semester. Phase one will start on Aug. 20, during which time all hot and cold food options at campus dining locations will be prepackaged and ready-made. These items will be available for pickup during your arrival and onboarding to Conn. You will select your food and take it with you as you leave the dining location. We anticipate that the first phase will continue through mid-September.
If we are not seeing a high prevalence of COVID-19 on our campus, we will transition to phase two. In this phase, you will have access to ready-made options and will be able to make selections from the hot and cold food lines. Your food will then be packaged so that you can take it with you as you leave the dining location. The length of this phase is yet to be determined and will be based on current health conditions and state guidance.
We have not yet determined when phase three will begin, but in this phase, you will have access to ready-made and take-out options—and to limited in-house seating at selected locations on campus. Please note that all of the dining locations and options this fall are for students only. Staff, faculty and guests will not be permitted in these spaces.
In all of these dining phases, you will be expected to maintain appropriate physical distancing and to wear a face mask at all times unless eating.
To help ensure social distancing at our dining locations, we are partnering with OpenTable, an app that will allow you to view the availability of dining locations at Conn and to make a reservation to pick up your food. The app is available on your mobile phone or on any computer or tablet, which you can download on the App Store or Google Play. Once your make your reservation, you will check in at the door and show your student ID. You will be using the OpenTable reservation system throughout the fall term.
Other dining changes we are implementing include:
Open Dining Locations
- Harris Dining Hall will operate seven days a week and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday–Saturday. Brunch and dinner will be served on Sunday. This location will offer seating during phase three.
- JA Dining Hall will operate five days a week and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday–Friday. JA will only offer grab-and-go and take-out options.
- Humphrey’s (Crozier-Williams) will operate Monday–Friday and serve lunch. Dinner will be served Sunday–Thursday. Humphrey’s will only offer grab-and-go and take-out options.
- The 1962 Room (Crozier-Williams) will operate seven days a week and serve lunch and dinner. On Saturdays and Sundays, there will also be a continental breakfast option. This location will offer seating during phase three.

The Oasis Snack Shop in Crozier-Williams will not be open for the foreseeable future. Dining Services is working on ways to potentially open Oasis for late night food options later in the semester. If you have creative ideas to share, contact us at email@example.com.
You will continue to have a meal plan this fall. You will be asked to swipe your ID card each time you enter a dining location in all three phases. Students who are approved to live off-campus are welcome to purchase a meal plan but are not required to do so. The REAL Office has sent information about meal plans to students who have been approved to live off-campus. Please send any questions you may have to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Menus and Food Offerings
To ensure the health and safety of our staff and the campus community, meal offerings will be more limited this semester. Many meal components, including those in dinners, will be offered in separate containers to allow customization. Each dining location will offer almost identical food options. We will produce “ready-made” sandwiches, wraps, salads and hot entrees in phase one.
We will continue to offer food options to accommodate allergies and other special dietary needs at all locations, including a full allergy pantry. Items will be individually packed for students to grab-and-go. In closing, we recognize that the grab-and-go format will generate additional packaging waste for our campus. To help us be more sustainable, please consider bringing a reusable bag with you when you pick up your grab-and-go items at the designated dining locations. Your support will help us eliminate plastic bag waste.
