Message from the Dean of Students: Advice on expediting your move-out plan

Dear Students,

Since our campus announcement last week, students have been steadily moving out of their spaces or making arrangements with friends, relatives, and local moving services to pack up their belongings and have them stored. It has been a tremendous mobilization of effort, and I appreciate everyone's cooperation.

We have been tracking your move-out plans, and it looks as though many of you are planning to move this week, and in particular, next weekend. I urge you to consider adjusting your plans now to come sooner rather than later. Ideally, if you are planning to retrieve your belongings yourself, then please try to come to campus by Wednesday, March 18. If you are not able to return by Wednesday, you may want to work with a friend, a relative, or a local packing, storage, or moving service that can get to campus by Wednesday to retrieve your belongings. If you change your move-out plan then please complete the Move-Out Plan Form again so that we can be prepared for your arrival on campus.

The reason I am offering this advice has to do with the rapidly evolving situation with COVID-19. It is possible that, sometime before the end of this week, travel to Conn may not be permitted either by Connecticut's Governor, Ned Lamont, or by the federal government. We want you to have the opportunity to collect necessary academic materials and personal belongings while it is still permissible.

To put this in different terms: we are concerned that, in the event that your travel is further restricted, you may find yourself in a situation where you do not have access to vital academic materials and needed personal items. We do not have sufficient staff to collect and ship each student’s materials and we want you to have a successful end to the semester, so we are sending this notice to ask you to consider accelerating your moving date.

I understand that coming to campus sooner may be a hardship for those of you who have already made plans, but our goal is to support you in retrieving important items before travel may be restricted.

Thank you for taking this advice seriously and do let me know if you have further questions.
