Reopening Shain and Greer Libraries and IT Service Desk

Here are the Charles E. Shain Library and Greer Music Library fall hours of operation and other information about the start of the semester.  See below for information about the IT Service Desk, the Academic Resource Center, and the Blue Camel Café. 
 
Shain and Greer Libraries will open to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty beginning August 31. The IT Service Desk will be located on the first floor of Shain combined with the Library Circulation Desk to provide increased space to accommodate social distancing. Students entering the libraries must have completed all required quarantines. Both libraries will be closed to visitors, alumni and community members until further notice.
 
 Hours for Shain:

  • August 31 - September 10:
    • Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.;
    • Closed Saturdays and Sundays.
  • September 11 through Thanksgiving:
    • Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.;
    • Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m.; and
    • Sundays, noon to 10 p.m.

 Hours for Greer:

  • August 31 - September 10:  Cummings will be closed.
    • Mondays through Fridays: By appointment only.  
    • Closed Saturdays and Sundays
  • September 11 through Thanksgiving:
    • Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.;
    • Saturdays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.;
    • Sundays, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
    • Circulation will be open during the above hours. It is planned that interlibrary loan of physical materials, and the CTW network exchange, will begin gradually, with full operations beginning Sept. 7.
    • Reserve materials are online only for the fall semester of 2020.
    • Reduced hours are to decrease the density of student interactions with peers and with staff.  Also, to allow for deep cleaning routines in the evenings.
    • Hours will be extended contingent on the availability of student workers.
    • After the library reopens on August 31, the program to request books with lobby pickup will continue in a different form, and will be available for those faculty who are working remotely. Details are being worked out and will be communicated soon 

 

  • Hours for the IT Service Desk
    • August 31 - September 10:
      • Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Saturdays and Sundays.
    • September 11 through Thanksgiving:
      • Mondays through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; 
      • Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and
      • Sundays, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
    • Hours will be extended contingent on the availability of student workers.

 

    • The Web Help Desk ticketing system, IT Service Desk phone at 860.439.4357 (HELP), and email at help@conncoll.edu are monitored:
      • August 31 – Winter Holiday Closing:
        • Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. 
        • Fridays, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.
      • Hours will be extended contingent on the availability of student workers.

 

  • The Shain Library Reference Desk services will begin on Tuesday, September 1.
    • September 1 - Winter Holiday closing
      • Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (in-person and virtual) and
      • Mondays through Wednesdays 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (virtual only). 
  • Hours for the Linda Lear Center for Special Collections and Archives:
    • August 31 - September 10:
      • Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.;
      • Closed Saturdays and Sundays.
    • September 11 through Thanksgiving:
      • Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.;
      • Closed Saturdays and Sundays
    • Research consultations or requests for materials from the Lear Center must be made 24 hours in advance.
    • The Blue Camel Café will open on September 11 to be consistent with campus restrictions on cafes and food services.  Hours will be extended contingent on the availability of student workers.

 

    • During the week beginning August 24, appointment times for faculty or staff are available to use the BookEye 4 scanner for digitizing documents. Sign up for an appointment here. After the library opens on Aug. 31, the faculty can use the scanner without an appointment.

 

  • The Academic Resource Center will follow the opening guidelines of the library.
    • Students will be able to use the ARC by appointment only. Students cannot co-opt space as theirs in the ARC. This will allow students equitable access to the limited spaces in the ARC.
    • “In-person” time with learning specialists will be by appointment only, and students will be asked to wait outside of the space until their appointment time.
    • ARC Hours:
      • Monday - Thursday (in-person): 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
      • Monday - Thursday (remote): 6:00 p.m.  - 9:30 p.m.
      • Friday (remote): 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
      • Saturday (remote): 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
      • Sunday (remote): 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
      • These hours will change as the semester progresses, and will depend completely on COVID changes on campus
    • There will be no group work taking place in the ARC, uness scheduled in advance and in compliance with limiting the number of people in the ARC at any given time.
    • The ARC will not be available to students when there are no ARC personnel on site. We will employ minimal student workers to monitor the space during remote hours so that students can study safely. They will also communicate how to access learning specialists via Zoom.
