Things To Know: Fall 2020 Information and Resources for Students

The following are some helpful reminders to guide your experience during the Fall 2020 semester. Remember, the Path Forward website should be your go-to resource for the latest information.

COVID-19 DASHBOARD AND CAMPUS ALERT LEVELS

You can track all testing and COVID-19 cases on our COVID-19 Dashboard. This dashboard, developed in collaboration with Hartford HealthCare, notes important data related to the number of tests administered, the number of positive cases and the percent positivity. These three data points are reported cumulatively and within a given week. In addition, the dashboard notes the number of active cases (people in isolation due to testing positive).

Updated four times a week, the dashboard follows a schedule that corresponds to the four days a week that the College is collecting samples. Typically, it takes 24-36 hours of processing time to allow for the samples to be tested at the Broad Institute in Massachusetts, to receive results from their lab and to have the data summarized and posted to the College’s dashboard.

Our Campus Alert Level Status and Response for 2020-21 details the College’s four alert levels (Green, Yellow, Orange and Red) and what activities are permissible at each level. The College's alert level is determined based on a series of factors outlined on the alert level site.

 FOLLOW THESE EXPECTATIONS

Below is some information to help guide you in supporting the College's efforts to maintain a safe campus and local community:

  • The three W’s are critical:
    • Wear a mask
    • Watch your distance - keep six feet apart from others
    • Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer
  • If you get together with friends, meet them outside rather than inside.
  • If you have someone in your room, be sure that they are at least six feet from you and you both need to have masks on. Open your window to enable more air circulation through the space.
  • People in a room, common room, at a table (inside or outside) or sitting in a group of chairs (inside or outside) need to be at least six feet apart and everyone must be wearing a mask.
  • The largest number of people who can be socializing together is 10. This socializing should be outside, unless you have reserved or have access to a large enough indoor space to accommodate up to 10 people maintaining six feet distance from each other.
  • If you are walking with a friend(s), everyone needs to be wearing a mask and walking with space between you (at least six feet).
  • You only have access to the building you live in. This same expectation applies to off-campus houses. Off-campus students may not go inside each other’s off-campus rental units and on-campus students may not go inside off-campus students’ rental units. This area related to going into buildings and houses is being reviewed with our infectious disease experts, as a possible change that may come with a shift to Alert Level 1—Green.
  • You may leave campus for specific reasons—see travel off-campus (local and long distance) below.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, have a party or other large gathering. This will very easily lead to an outbreak, as we have seen at other colleges and universities.

Please reference the Camels Care Pledge and accompanying health and safety requirements, as it details the expectations after onboarding quarantine. In addition, you can reference a new document that shares the same information in a new format: Select COVID-19 Expectations and Possible Consequences.

     REMEMBER YOUR TESTING DAY

It is your responsibility to go to the Testing Center on your assigned testing days and times.  Below are some helpful tips to keep in mind when scheduling tests and how you will receive reminders. You can also visit our Camel COVID-19 Testing Center page for more specific information.

    • Schedule Testing Times Every Week
      • You should schedule your testing time at least 24 hours in advance. Some of you are waiting to set a time until the day of your testing and the time slots you would like to have in the afternoon are taken. If the afternoon is booked, then you need to sign up for a morning slot.
      • When you book an appointment, it is only set for the day that you booked it. The app does not set the time as a reoccurring appointment. You need to book each week and you can choose different times on your assigned days.
      • In the CoVerified app, you can cancel an appointment and rebook one if your schedule changes.
    • Get Tested on Your Testing Day
      • Each morning, you will receive an email reminding you that it is your testing day.
      • Attendance is being tracked to ensure that students are showing up on their assigned day. If you do not show up, you will receive an email at the end of the day noting that our records show that you did not attend and the note will include instructions on what to do next.
      • If you miss three testing days in the semester, you will be required to shift to remote education off-campus. Timely testing is too important to the College’s plan. If you are not being responsible with testing, you cannot stay on campus.

DON’T FORGET THESE APPS AND WEBPAGES

    • Connecticut College Mobile: This new mobile app offers information about campus events, dining menus and access to College resources. Also included is a link to guest registration. To download this free app, go to the App Store or Google Play. Once you download the app, login with your Conn College username and password.
    • Rave Guardian App: Includes important information, resources, safety functions and key emergency contacts that you can access with a push of a button. To download the free app, go to the App Store or Google Play. Once you download the app, login with your Conn College username and password.
    • OpenTable – Use the OpenTable app (available on the App Store or Google Play) or website to reserve a dining time.
      • Enable Location Settings for OpenTable (or search by location if using a web browser).
      • If searching by location, you can simply enter a time and see which of the four locations have availability at that time or at the closest available time.
      • It is possible to search an individual dining hall. There are four Dining Halls/Locations: Harris Dining, Humphrey’s, Jane Addams and the 1962 Room. Refer to CamelWeb for days and hours of operation.
      • The “party size” will always be “1.”
      • You can make a reservation up to three days in advance and reservations will be in 15-minute blocks of time. Please keep in mind that the number of people allowed in the serving area is restricted, so you may encounter a short wait. You can easily change your reservation as well.
      • If you arrive at a dining hall without a reservation, you will be allowed entry ONLY if there is excess capacity at that particular dining hall at that particular time.

CHECK OUT QUICK TIPS ON COVERIFIED

Everyone on campus will need to access CoVerified, either via the app or on the computer via this website. You will use CoVerified to do the following:

    • Complete daily symptom checks
    • Schedule times for testing on assigned testing days
    • Receive notification of test results

The app will assign you one of three status labels: Remote, Clear or Restricted. Remote means that you are not on campus and therefore you are not expected to follow the daily symptom check and testing expectations. You will be restricted if you do not complete your daily symptom check and if you are in quarantine or isolation. In various places on campus (classroom, workshops, etc.), you will be expected to show the app status screen or website printout to demonstrate your campus status (Clear or Restricted). If you are restricted, you will not be permitted to remain in the space.

    Symptom Checking

    • Everyone needs to check for symptoms each day. If you do not, the app automatically shifts your status to restricted.
    • If you need a thermometer, you can pick up a free one from the health center. Please call ahead before entering: (860) 439-2275.
    • Remember: Only log NEW symptoms into the app–for example, if you regularly have headaches, don’t log that you have a headache.
    • If you note that you have symptoms, you will be shifted to restricted and will need to call Student Health Services (860-439-2275) to talk to a nurse about your symptoms and to discuss next steps. The nurse will determine whether you shift from restricted to clear.

     USE CAMPUS TEMPERATURE SCANNERS

Temperature scanners are in five locations on campus:

    • Harris Dining entrance
    • 1962 Dining entrance
    • Shain Library entrance
    • Testing Center entrance
    • Athletic Center entrance (Luce Fieldhouse)

If the machine detects that you have a temperature (100.4 or higher), then you are expected to leave the space and return to your room. The machine will show an alert message that states “Go back to your room and read the ‘I have a temperature’ instructions in the CoVerified app. Do not enter the [space you are trying to enter].” In the CoVerified app menu at the bottom of the screen, you will see the Info option. Go to info and you will find a series of resources that will provide you with detailed instructions on what to do in a variety of different COVID-19 related situations, including if a scanner detects that you have a temperature.

     TRANSPORTATION & VEHICLES

At Alert Level 2–Yellow and Alert Level 1–Green, a person with a vehicle can have a passenger with them. Both individuals need to be wearing masks and windows should be open to facilitate greater ventilation. You may also ride with a roommate or apartmentmates. If you take an Uber/Lyft, be sure that you and the driver are wearing masks and you have your window open. Two students may share the same Uber/Lyft.

     VISITORS

When in Alert Level 3—Orange, visitors may not come to campus, unless it is an extenuating circumstance with approval from your class dean.

When in Alert Level 2—Yellow and Alert Level 1—Green, families are allowed to come to campus. Family members may not enter residence halls and may only enter Crozier-Williams to use the restrooms or if there is inclement weather. You and your family members must wear masks and be socially distanced when around each other.

You need to register visiting family with the College, which can be done in CamelWeb or in the CC Mobile app.

    • In CamelWeb, go to the section For Students and under student links look for Register Visiting Family. Click on the link and complete the form.
    • In the CC Mobile app, go to Campus Life, click on the Register Visiting Family tile and complete the form.

This information goes to the gatehouse so that the Campus Safety staff member can allow your visiting family to enter our campus.

     TRAVEL OFF-CAMPUS (LOCAL)

The College expects you to limit local off-campus engagement to necessary locations and purposes, such as grocery stores, pharmacies and doctor’s appointments, or if required as part of a class-related off-campus engagement or College-authorized activity. If you have other extenuating circumstances, you can speak with your class dean to determine whether you can leave campus for the particular purpose desired.

You may also leave campus if you are going to be in outdoor spaces where you can be socially distanced from other people (e.g. outdoor dining, public park or at an off-campus student’s rental unit outside). You may not eat indoors. In all circumstances, you are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing whenever you leave campus grounds.

The local area is defined as New London County (Old Lyme to the west, CT/RI border to the east, Norwich/Lisbon/Sprague to the North), which roughly encompasses a 15-mile radius from campus.

     TRAVEL OFF-CAMPUS (DISTANCE)

For the duration of the semester, the College expects you to stay on campus and not leave New London County unless there is an extenuating circumstance (e.g. medical needs or bereavement) that requires you to leave. In order to manage requests more effectively, if you have an extenuating circumstance, you need to get approval from your class dean by following the steps below:

    1. Complete the Off-Campus Travel Approval Form.
    2. Submit the form no later than Wednesdays at 5 p.m. for a response by that Friday.
    3. Class deans will review requests on Thursdays and may follow up with you for additional information/context.
    4. The class dean will inform you by Friday morning if your request is approved or denied.
    5. Late and last-minute requests will not be considered as the class deans will not be reviewing requests over the weekends.

If you are approved to leave the State of Connecticut overnight, when you come back to campus you will need to return to onboard quarantine until you have two on-campus negative tests (5–7 days). You will likely not be approved to go to a travel advisory state, but in the unusual circumstance where this is unavoidable, you will need to be in onboard quarantine for 14 days upon your return.

STATE IMPOSED FINES ADDED IN MID-SEPTEMBER

An executive order from the State of Connecticut authorizes officials to issue fines in association with failure to wear a face covering ($100), hosting gatherings that violate size restrictions ($500), and/or attending gatherings that violate size restriction guidelines ($250). Off-campus residents who have a gathering that violates state regulations may be fined by the local police and guests may also be fined.

You can read the full order by Governor Lamont here and below is a summary.

Connecticut governor's authorization for the issuance of fines authorizes the commissioner of Public Health, local health departments, municipal chief elected officers, and state and local police to issue fines for violations of certain COVID-19 protective measures. These include:

    • A fine of $100 for any person who fails to wear a mask or cloth face covering as required under Executive Order No. 7NNN;
    • A fine of $500 for any person or business entity who organizes, hosts, or sponsors a gathering that violates the gathering size restrictions set forth in the DECD Rules for Gatherings and Venues and Sector Rules for Outdoor Events; and
    • A fine of $250 for any person who attends a gathering that violates the gathering size restrictions set forth in the DECD Rules for Gatherings and Venues and Sector Rules for Outdoor Events.
