Writer in Residence and Vistiing Assistant Professor

The English Department at Connecticut College seeks a Writer in Residence specializing in prose fiction and/or nonfiction writing for a one-year, full-time teaching position with the potential for renewal at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin 1 August 2024. The position is salaried and eligible for benefits. An MFA or Ph.D. is required for appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, but candidates who hold an M.A. and are in the process of completing a terminal degree may also be considered. We are a department of ten faculty members with a broad range of commitments to interdisciplinary programs and centers on campus, including the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity; the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology; American Studies; Environmental Studies; the department of Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectionality Studies; and others. All faculty teach courses at all levels.

The successful candidate will join a thriving program in Creative Writing as one of two full-time Writers in Residence. Our program in Creative Writing is a valuable part of the English major, and Fiction and Nonfiction writing courses are very much in demand among our students. Our student writers take Creative Writing courses alongside literature courses, and they benefit from one-on-one mentoring relationships with our Writers in Residence. We are proud of the success of this program, which has launched many careers. Creative Writing events on campus include the biennial Daniel Klagsbrun Symposium and other events and readings by writers including Jhumpa Lahiri, Ocean Vuong, Amy Tan, David Sedaris, Art Spiegelman, and others; and readings by students. The successful candidate will collaborate with English department faculty to organize readings and other Creative Writing events.

Courses taught by the person hired for this position may include Writing the Short Story, Seminar in Fiction, and Narrative Nonfiction and Creative Writing courses of their own design. Advising student Honors Theses in Fiction or Nonfiction writing is also expected.

In addition to vibrant connections within the English major, the successful candidate may benefit from collaboration with other Arts programs on campus, including Studio Art, Music, Theater, and Film.

The teaching load for a full-time visitor is five courses per academic year.
