Herta Payson, 84, a former theater professor who worked at the College for nearly 30 years, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017.

Herta joined Connecticut College in the spring of 1975 as visiting lecturer in Theater Studies, teaching costume construction in classroom and laboratory sessions. In the fall of 1975, she became a visiting instructor in Theater, and she was an instructor and costumer until she was named assistant professor and costumer in 1998. She was acting chair of the Theater Department from 1998 to 2001. Herta retired from the College in 2004.

Herta earned a bachelor’s degree from Goddard College, a master’s degree from Vermont College at Norwich University, and a doctorate from The Union Institute.

Along with her teaching, Herta led an active life in the local community as a psychotherapist, weaver and fabric artist.
