Andrews Makes 14 Saves for Camels
NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Wesleyan University women´s soccer team (8-5-1, 4-5) earned a 3-0 victory at Connecticut College (4-10, 0-9) Friday afternoon. The Cardinals draw the number seven seed in the 2009 NESCAC Championship Tournament and will visit second seeded Amherst for a noon-time Quarterfinal match up in Amherst, Mass. Sunday afternoon.
First year forward Laura Kurash (Voorhees, N.J.) buried a free kick from 25 yards out in the 31st minute of action to put the Cardinals on top for good. With 2:40 remaining in the half, Dasha Battelle (Brookline, Mass.) buried a header in traffic on a cross from Beth Kenworthy (New York, N.Y.) to extend the visitors advantage to two goals.
Connecticut College senior Bailey Andrews (Pembroke, N.Y.) collected12 of her 14 saves in the opening half to keep the score down. In the Camel backfield, senior Molly McRoskey (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Jacqui Durand (Natick, Mass.) protected Andrews with defensive stops that prevented two additional goals from being scored.
In the second stanza, Anna Crystal (Newton, Mass.) assisted Kaitlin Ashley (New Canaan, Conn.) on the third goal in the 57th minute of action and the Cardinals had more than enough for the 3-0 victory.
Kate Connolly-Smithwick (Center Moriches, N.Y.) had six saves in the blanking for the Cardinals. Wesleyan set a program-record with the team´s seventh shutout of the season.
Olivia Gerde (Camarillo, Calif.), Ali McKeigue (Arlington, Mass.) and Jenna Ross (Longmeadow, Mass.) each contributed two shots in the setback for the hosts.
