Castle Classic: Coast Guard 73, Connecticut College 60
McGuinness Nets Career-High with 14 Points for Camels
PURCHASE, N.Y.--Trip Fernandes (Branford, Conn.) poured in a game-high 17 points to lead the Coast Guard Academy Bears (2-1) to a 73-60 victory against Connecticut College (0-1) in the first round of the Castle Classic hosted by Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. Eric Hudson (Pasadena, Calif.) and Greg Marshall (Gaithersburg, Md.) chipped in with 15 points each for the Bears, who will play the Valiants of Manhattanville in the Championship game Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
Connecticut College sophomore guard Eddie McGuinness (Pearl River, N.Y.) netted a career-high 14 points for the Camels and was 4-for-5 from three-point distance in just 10 minutes of action. Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) narrowly missed out on a double-double with 15 points and nine boards in the setback. Senior captain Shavar Bernier (Dover, N.H.) added 13 points and three steals. Bernier was 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
The Camels will meet a familiar foe in the 3:00 p.m. consolation game Saturday when they take on John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Camels defeated the Bloodhounds 71-47 in their last meeting back on Jan. 21, 2008 in New London.
