Kowtoniuk Scores for Camels, Christopher Closes in on 1,000th Save
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The sixth ranked Middlebury women´s hockey team defeated Connecticut College 3-1 in the season opener for both teams that was played at Kenyon Arena Friday night. Anna McNally scored two goals to lead the Panthers to the NESCAC win.
McNally opened the score with a goal at 3:26 of the first period for the Panthers. Heather McCormack extended the Panther lead to two goals when she scored at 5:09 of the first period. But with 6:13 remaining in the first, the Camels were able to halve the Panther advantage when Ashleigh Kowtoniuk stuffed home a rebound of a Brigid O´Gorman shot to make it a 2-1 game.
Junior Celia Medeiros had a chance to tie the game in the second period but her shot hit the post. McNally scored her second goal with 3:49 remaining in the middle period and the host had regained their two goal advantage.
Lani Wright finished with 12 saves for the Panthers. Senior Sara Christopher stopped 34 shots for the Camels. Christopher is now just 18 saves away from 1,000 for her career. The Camels were a perfect 7-for-7 in penalty killing situations. After a brief layover in North Adams Friday night, the Camels will head to Williams College Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. game in Williamstown, Mass.
