Wilson Notches Win in Coaching Debut for Camels
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.-Jenn Shinall (Redding Ridge, Conn.) scored a game-high 22 points with five steals and four assists to lead the Connecticut College women´s basketball team (1-0) to a 74-54 victory against Mount Ida College (1-2) in the first round of the Hampton Inn Classic hosted by UMass Dartmouth Saturday night.
Senior Emily Cummings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) chipped in with 16 points for Connecticut College on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. It was a memorable night for Brian Wilson, who was victorious in his debut as the head coach of the Camel women´s basketball program.
The Camels will play in the Championship game against the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth, who grounded the Hawks of Green Mountain College in a 65-39 victory Saturday night.
Connecticut College senior Laura Coderre (Monson, Mass.) contributed eight points and nine rebounds in the post. Rita Holak (Windham, N.H.) added eight points and five boards off the bench. The Camels shot 76% from the line (19-for-25) in the triumph and induced 34 turnovers in an impressive defensive effort.
The Camels carried a 36-26 lead into the break. In the second stanza, Connecticut College reeled off a 10-to-0 run to open up a 50-31 advantage. Cummings buried a three-pointer with 14:38 remaining to cap the rally and the Camels never looked back.
Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, Mass.) poured in 21 points to lead the Mustangs in the loss. Senior forward Ashley Boyd (Hanson, Mass.) added 10 points for Mount Ida, who will play in the consolation game Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
