Porter Notches Third Double-Double of Season with 17 points & 11 Rebounds
NEWPORT, R.I.--Salve Regina University (1-7) earned a 67-58 victory against Connecticut College (3-5) at the Rogers Center Friday night. Junior guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) poured in a game-high 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field.
Dan Royce (Mahwah, N.J.) logged a double-double with 20 points and 14 boards for the Seahawks.
Connecticut College sophomore Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds en route to his third double-double of the season. Shavar Bernier (Dover, N.H.) finished with 11 points. Junior Dean Lampe (Hamilton, Mass.) contributed nine points and five rebounds for the Camels.
The Seahawks carried a 32-31 lead into the break. The second half featured four ties but the hosts used a 7-to-0 run to take a 51-43 lead on a Royce field goal with 8:21 remaining in regulation.
Salve enjoyed its largest lead of the game at 59-50 after Jabreche Boyd (West Haven, Conn.) converted a pair of free throws with 4:03 to go. The Camels countered with consecutive field goals, trimming the lead to 61-57 with 1:23 remaining after Porter induced a turnover with a double-team and assisted Bernier for a deuce in transition.
But the Camels could not get any closer and the Seahawks were able to seal the 67-58 victory at the foul line.
