Barone Named to IWLCA All-Region Team for Connecticut College
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College sophomore Hope Barone of North Kingstown, R.I. has been named to the Intercollegiate Women´s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region Team. Barone was honored as a second team selection in the Berkshires Region.
Barone enjoyed a breakout season for the Camels, helping the team make a two win improvement in the standings. A fearless competitor, Barone won countless battles for possession in the trenches and finished fifth in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with 45 draw controls. After scoring 22 goals in a productive rookie season of 2009, Barone erupted with 35 goals to rank eighth in the conference this spring. She caused 15 turnovers and collected 28 ground balls for the Camels.
Connecticut College Head Women´s Lacrosse Coach Heather McClelland was pleased to learn of the achievement for Barone, who will be expected to play an even bigger role in the program´s development over the next two years.
"Hope really had a breakout season this year," McClelland asserted. "She stepped up for us as a leader and became a go-to midfielder. At the end of her freshman season, we talked about improving her defense so she could become more of an impact player for us in the midfield. Hope took that and put it into action with her off-season training and in-season practices. She is a very coachable kid with a lot of desire. She wants to win and will do what it takes to get there."
In the classroom as biology major, Barone has distinguished herself as a Dean´s List student.
