Women´s Co-Captains Rebecca Heupel & Caroline Barone Have Helped Lead the Camels to a 4-1 Start this Season
ORLANDO, Fla. --The Connecticut Women's Tennis Team (4-1) continued their winning ways in Orlando Fla., securing two decisive victories Friday. In the morning, the Camels resumed their match against Springfield College - which had been suspended from the previous evening due to rain - and notched a 9-0 victory. In the afternoon, the Camels crossed town to take on St. Michael´s College in 80 degree heat; the Camels won 8-1. Co-Captain Becca Heupel showed a gutsy performance on the day at #2 singles. Against Springfield College, Heupel suffered a minor knee injury while lunging for a ball, but continued to persevere through the pain to win 6-3, 6-1 against a very feisty Springfield opponent. In the afternoon, Heupel used heavy topspin shots to overpower her St. Michael´s opponent and win 7-5, 7-5. Co-Captain Caroline Barone also had a strong day, winning 6-1, 7-5 against Springfield College, and 6-1, 6-2 against St Michaels; both matches at #4 singles. Barone has yet to lose a set in Florida. In doubles play, the freshman tandem of Sara Krivoshik and Brittany Cangemi turned in stellar performances for the Camels. Krivoshik and Cangemi won 8-3 against Springfield College then 9-8 (7-4) in a two-hour thriller against St Michaels As the match extended into a tie-breaker, Cangemi showed great poise by remaining steady from the baseline and aggressive at the net. Sometimes scores can be deceiving. On Friday, the Camel Men's Tennis Team (3-3) took on NESCAC rival Hamilton College in Orlando, Fla., losing 9-0. Despite the score, many of the men battled through close matches. Junior co-captain Trevor Prophet fought hard at #1 singles before falling to his opponent in three sets 6-3, 5-7, and 1-6. At #3 singles, George King fell just short of taking the first set, losing 5-7 in the tiebreaker, and couldn't find the energy to mount a comeback in the second set, losing 6-2. Sophomore Jeff Weisberger also had a close match, losing in a third set super tiebreaker 7-5, 5-7, 0-1 (7-10). In doubles play, the freshman tandem of Jacob Levin and Jeremy Bader played well in their first match together, but fell 7-9 to a strong Hamilton doubles team. With the loss, the men finished up their Florida trip with a 2-2 posting. The Camels are looking forward to the remainder of their schedule up in New England for the remainder of the season.
