Camels Finish Sixth at NESCAC Champ. with 880 Points
Murphy Qualifies for NCAA Champ. in 200 Yard Fly
MIDDLEBURY, Vt.--The Connecticut College women's swimming and diving team visited Middlebury College for the 2010 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship. The Camels placed sixth in the Championship with a score of 880 points.
Williams College won its 10th NESCAC crown with a score of 1954 points. Amherst placed second with 1376 points and Middlebury finished third with 1148 points.
For the second straight year, Sarah Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) has qualified for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship. Murphy posted a time of 2:05.02 in the 200 yard butterfly to place fifth in the event. Murphy notched a time of 2:04.78 in the prelims, stamping her ticket to the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
In addition to her performance in the 200 yard fly, Murphy provisionally qualified for four other events. In the 200 yard individual medley, Murphy placed seventh, setting a school record with a time of 2:10.09. In the 100 yard butterfly time trial, Murphy touched the finish line in 57.20 seconds.
In the 800 yard free relay, Murphy swam the lead leg in a time of 1:53.72. Murphy logged a time of 4:32.18 in the prelims of the 400 yard individual medley in another school record setting performance.
Sophomore Erika Fernandes (Westport, Mass.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.13 seconds. Fernandes placed second in the event for the Camels and will formally be named to the All-NESCAC Team when it is announced.
The Camels earned three B cuts in the relays. In the 200 yard medley relay, Jessica Schanzer (Monterey, Calif.), Katie Karlson (Wayland, Mass.), Leigh Weymouth (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Fernandes placed third and will garner All-NESCAC honors with their time of 1:49.00. Fernandes, Schanzer, Leigh Weymouth, and Sarah Murphy logged a time of 1:38.11 in the 200 yard freestyle relay. In the 400 yard free relay, Fernandes, Caitlin Munns (Westfield, Mass.), Schanzer and Murphy posted a time of 3:35.09 for the Camels.
In addition to Murphy´s two records, Leigh Weymouth established a record in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 26.37 seconds.
