Connecticut College & Coast Guard Set to Host Citizens Bank Camel/Cadet Classic
NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College and Coast Guard men´s basketball programs are excited to host the first annual Citizens Bank Camel/Cadet Classic in New London this weekend.
The Classic format will tip-off Friday night with two games at Connecticut College. The host Camels will take on John Jay College at 6:00 p.m. and will be immediately followed by an 8:00 p.m. meeting between the Coast Guard and Medgar Evers College.
The Camel men´s basketball program will be hosting 20 special guests to Luce Field House from the New London Community Friday night. The students participate in Project KBA (Kids, Books, and Athletics), a grass roots program sponsored by the Connecticut College Office of Volunteers and Community Service (OVCS) that promotes literacy and fitness in the New London School system. Citizens Bank will be providing all of the guests from the KBA program with complimentary t-shirts.
Saturday afternoon, the action shifts across the street to the Coast Guard. The Camels will clash with the Cougars of Medgar Evers in the 1:00 p.m. game and the host Bears will meet John Jay at 3:00 p.m. in the final game of the weekend. All four games and parking at both facilities are free of charge.
Connecticut College head men´s basketball coach Tom Satran and Coast Guard head men´s basketball coach Kevin Jaskiewicz are looking forward to a fun-filled weekend of basketball action in the Whaling City and hope you can make it out to the games.
"Coach Jaskiewicz and I are excited about the upcoming tournament," Satran said. "We are grateful to Citizens Bank for making these four local games possible and we are hopeful this can develop into an ongoing December tradition. It should be a fun event."
The Coast Guard has won three of its last five outings to even its record to 3-3. Freshman guard Kevin Sowers is averaging 15.4 points per game to lead the Bears in the early season. Sophomore forward Greg Marshall has contributed 13.7 points and 5.5 boards per game for the Bears while senior Jevon James has chipped in with 11.3 points and seven rebounds per outing to lead the Coast Guard in the front court.
Connecticut College junior point guard Brian Mahoney and sophomore Rob Harrigan were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the Keene State College-Adrenaline Circuit Tip-Off last week. Harrigan is averaging 10.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while Mahoney has contributed 7.3 points per outing for the Camels (1-3). First year forward Taylor Hanson is shooting 66% from the field and is contributing 10.3 points and five boards per contest in a productive rookie season.
The Bloodhounds of John Jay have raced out to a 4-1 start this season. Freshman Jamar Harry is averaging a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds per game while junior forward Jerome Alexander has poured in 20.2 points per contest in the early season.
Medgar Evers has posted a 3-4 record so far this season. The Cougars have been led by junior James Gilmore who is contributing 16.3 points per game from the backcourt. Sophomore forward Jovan Deare has chipped in with 11.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest.
