GREENCASTLE, Ind.--Alex Samma has made history as Connecticut College´s first field athlete to garner NCAA All-America honors on three separate occasions. With his back to the wall in ninth place and one final round to go, Samma landed his best jump of the day to secure a sixth place finish with an All-America performance at DePauw University. Samma, who has overcome injuries to his shin this year after dealing with pain in his hamstrings last season, worked tirelessly with Connecticut College´s training staff, had been out for a month. As he prepared for his final jump, Samma turned to the crowd for some support by clapping his hands together. The energy of the crowd provided him with an emotional lift as he soared through the air for a season-best jump of 47 feet, seven and three quarters of an inch. "He´s our first three-time All-American in a field event," Connecticut College Head Track & Field Coach Ned Bishop said. The Hoosier State of Indiana has been a special place for Samma. Last March in Terre Haute, Samma was crowned as the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Champion when he covered a distance of 49 feet, five and one half of an inch for Connecticut College. Saturday afternoon, Samma was quick to deflect the attention away from himself and thank his coaches Ned Bishop and Sarah Burkhardt for their advice. "I really did my best today, knowing that it was my last indoor championship," Samma said. "Coaches Bishop and Burkhardt just told me to relax. So I prayed and relaxed." Samma will return home to Connecticut Sunday to celebrate his achievement with the rest of his teammates and friends. "Considering how long he was out, this was a very successful day for him and the program," Bishop said. "We are very pleased with his clutch performance this afternoon." Connecticut College fans will have an opportunity to watch Samma and the rest of the Camels in their first home meet of the spring season April 17, the Silfen Invitational in New London.
