Gaffny, Camels, Breakout in Second Half
NEW LONDON, Conn. -The Connecticut College field hockey team opened the 2010 season with a 4-0 shutout victory against Bates College on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field. Lauren Gaffny (North Andover, Mass.) scored 3:40 into the second half to spark the Camels on a scoring spree with a goal. Gaffny and Britt Fitzgerald (Ridgefield, Conn.) both had a goal and an assist in the second stanza for the winning side.
Senior Abby Hine (Madison, Conn.) scored the third and fourth goals of the contest for the Camels. Hine moved into third place on the program´s all-time scoring list, passing Jill Mauer ´08 with a career total of 74 points.
Aimee Rich (Darien, Conn.) made one save to earn the shutout in her collegiate debut. Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) was impressive in defeat, coming up with 20 saves for the visitors.
McEnroe made a diving stop on a penalty stroke in the second half for the visitors. Sarah Merullo (Essex, Mass.) provided some solid defensive stick-work for Bates. Merullo induced a turnover to thwart a 3-on-1 Camel scoring situation in the first half of action.
The Camels piled up 12 shots and 13 corners in the opening half but could not find the back of the cage. Gaffny finally got the Camels on the board at 38:40 of the contest. Just 3:20 later, Gaffny fed Fitzgerald in a 2-on-1 situation versus McEnroe.
Hine was cruising up and down the field all afternoon and buried one of her 13 shots with 18:43 remaining to make it a 3-0 contest. Hine closed out the scoring with 10:48, taking a feed from Liz Rosenfeld (Leola, Pa.) for the 29th goal of her career.
