Weisberger, Suneby Triumph at #1 and #2 Singles in Home Tournament
NEW LONDON, Conn. --The Connecticut College men's tennis team co-hosted a four-team individual tournament with the Coast Guard Academy Saturday. Senior Jeff Weisberger (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman Joshua Suneby (Wellesley, Mass.) paved the way for the Camels with individual flight victories in their respective slots at #1 and #2 singles.
Weisberger coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 win in the first round against Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) of Manhattanville College. In the final, the senior rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory in the super tie-breaker against Blake Maurer (Fort Worth, Tex.) of the Coast Guard.
In the opening round, Suneby cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) of Roger Williams University before closing out the flight victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win against the Coast Guard's Nick Martin (State College, Pa.).
Freshman John Cangelosi (Estero, Fla.) won the fifth singles flight. Cangelosi earned a 6-0, 6-3 against Karim Mahmoud (Cairo, Egypt) of Manhattanville and went on take the final round with a 7-6, 6-1 triumph against Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) of Roger Williams.
The Camels won three consolation rounds. Senior Jeremy Bader (Lexington, Mass.) earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) of Roger Williams to win the consolation round at #3 singles.
Will Tucker (London, U.K.) posted a 7-5, 6-2 win against Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.) to win at #4. Huan Nguyen (Pleasantville, N.Y.) collected the third consolation win at #6 with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Gabriel Berlingeri of Manhattanville.
The Camels dominated in the doubles pairings, taking three of the four match ups. Suneby and Weisberger paired up for an 8-5 win against Maurer and Chris Hoffman (El Lago, Tex.) of Coast Guard in the #1 doubles flight.
Cangelosi and Nguyen earned an 8-5 victory against DeNunzio and Zach Bussiere (Colchester, Vt.) of Roger Williams in the finals to take the third doubles flight.
In the fourth doubles flight, freshman Mike Fratt (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore Will Tucker triumphed with an 8-2 victory against their opposition from the Coast Guard.
Junior Mike DeCorato (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Jeremy Bader won the consolation round at second doubles, outlasting Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Berlingeri of Manhattanville in an 8-1 victory.
