Newman Repeats as NESCAC Player of the Week for Connecticut College
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College senior outside hitter Amy Newman of Los Angeles, Calif. has been honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Newman earned the conference accolade for the second consecutive week.
Newman led the Camels to a second-place showing at the MIT Invitational, earning All-Tournament Team honors during a 3-1 week by averaging 4.75 kills and 2.69 digs per set while hitting at a .287 rate.
She recorded a double-double in kills and digs in three of the four matches. On Friday evening, Newman had 25 kills and 11 digs with a .364 attack percentage in a 3-1 win before netting 26 kills and nine digs in a 3-2 decision over Frostburg St.
In the latest NCAA statistical report released on Sept. 18, Newman is ranked fifth in the nation with an average of 4.64 kills per set.
Connecticut College Head Volleyball Coach Josh Edmed was pleased with Newman's leadership and the entire team's effort against a deeply talented field at MIT and is looking ahead to another big weekend of conference action.
"Amy had another tremendous weekend for us," Edmed said. "She is playing at a very high level and was dominant against four very strong opponents at the MIT Invitational. Her hard work is putting our team in great opportunities for success and we know that this trend will continue with some great practices this week."
Newman has been honored on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America team in each of the past two years. She garnered third team honors for the Camels in her junior campaign after receiving honorable mention recognition in 2009.
Newman helped guide the Camels to a 19-7 record in 2010, leading the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with 5.17 kills per set and hit at a .296 clip to rank fifth in the league.
She was honored on the first team of the All-NESCAC squad for the second straight year and made her inaugural appearance on the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District One Volleyball Team in the College Division.
Newman reached a career milestone Sept. 10, burying her 1,000th kill against Keene State College. She has accounted for 11151 kills and 691 digs over the course of her career.
Newman has been recognized for her prowess in the classroom as a Dean's Honors student and was honored on the 2010 NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team.
She will receive a degree in mathematics this spring.
