College hosts talk as part of Asian Pacific Islander Month

Vijay Prashad, the George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and professor of international studies at Trinity College, will visit Connecticut College April 22 to deliver "Our Ethics, Our Empire." In his talk, Prashad will discuss the relationship minorities now in the United States have to the worldwide empire built by the U.S. and any obligation those minorities may feel toward the rest of the world once they've gained the rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship.

He is the author of numerous books, including "Karma of Brown Folk," "Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting: Afro-Asian Connections and the Myth of Cultural Purity" and "Keeping Up with the Dow Joneses: Debt, Prison, Workfare." His most recent book, "The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World," was chosen as the best nonfiction book of 2008 by the Asian-American Writers' Workshop.

Shanshan Lan, Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Center for Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity, said professor Prashad is a leading scholar in Asian-American Studies. "His works have made a significant contribution to coalition-building between the Asian-American and African-American communities," she explained. "His visit to campus will definitely help promote diversity and a more complex understanding of race, immigration and inter-ethnic relations in many constructive ways."

The talk is sponsored by the Center for Comparative Studies of Race and Ethnicity and will take place Friday, April 22, at 11:50 a.m. in Room 210 of the Blaustein Humanities Center.
