Camels Erupt with Three Second Half Scoring Strikes in Lewiston
LEWISTON, Maine --(Bates College Sports Information) Connecticut College overcame a 1-0 deficit, then pulled away from a 1-1 tie at halftime to register a 4-1 defeat of the Bates College field hockey team on Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.
Bates (4-7, 1-6 NESCAC) junior Polly Merck (Beverly Farms, Mass.) scored her team-high seventh goal this season less than five minutes into the contest, off an assist by sophomore Caroline Falcone (New Canaan, Conn.), and Bates carried its advantage for the next 27 minutes of action.
Four different players scored for the Camels (6-5, 3-5 NESCAC). Brittany Fitzgerald led things off, tying the game at 1-1 with an unassisted tally with 2:55 left in the first half, her fourth goal this season.
After intermission, just 2:45 into the second half, Jillian Dahrooge connected on her second goal with an assist from Maggie Schroeder, giving the Camels a 2-1 lead. Heidi Halsted scored on a penalty corner play for Connecticut College, tying Fitzgerald for the team lead with her fourth goal this season. Shaelin Gottlick tacked on another score with 6:41 left in the game for a 4-1 score.
Becca Napolitano preserved the win with six saves for the Camels. For Bates, junior Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) started and made three saves, including one in the second half, while first-year Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass.) made three saves in the second half. Senior back Alie Philip (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded her second defensive save this season.
Bates plays at Tufts on Wednesday at 4:30pm in another NESCAC match. The Camels play at Wesleyan in a conference game on Wednesday at 7pm.
