An eight-time All-American runner, an All-American swimmer and a men's basketball player graduating a year early with an economics degree are among the 68 Connecticut College student athletes named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) 2014 Winter All-Academic Team.

To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A transfer student must have completed one year of study at the institution.

“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes in the classroom,” said Fran Shields, the Christoffers Director of Athletics and chair of physical education. “Their commitment to their teams and their academics represent the best of Division III.”

During his remarks at President Katherine Bergeron's Saturday, Wesleyan University President Michael Roth, chair-elect of the NESCAC, spoke about the conference's unique philosophy of intercollegiate athletics. Members of the NESCAC, which also includes Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity, Tufts and Williams, are committed first and foremost to academic excellence and believe that athletic programs should support the educational mission of the institutions.

“The NESCAC is devoted to the scholar athlete," Roth said. "We are devoted to bringing to our campuses competition at the highest level with also a freedom for play, for fellowship and for fairness."

Among the impressive scholar-athletes honored are:

  • Michael LeDuc ’14, a 2013 Capital One Academic All-American who cruised to All-American finishes in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. The senior standout is an eight-time All-American in track and cross country and a two-time NCAA champion. A botany major, LeDuc has been named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team for each of the last eight season.
  • Julia Pielock ’14, an art history major who capped off her prolific swimming career with a First-Team All-American swim in the 100-yard freestyle at the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship to lead the Camels to a 16th place overall finish.
  • Pat Deegan ’14, a guard on the men’s basketball team who is graduating from the College in just three years with a degree in economics. Deegan was also honored on the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
