The coed sailing team placed 16th in the national sailing championship, which wrapped on Friday in St. Mary’s City, Md.

The Camels have built a successful program in sailing, a physically and mentally demanding sport. In a recent feature, NBC Connecticut interviewed Coach Jeff Bresnahan and team members on the rigors of sailing and how the team prepared for nationals.

The team finished with a total of 342 points at the 79th Annual Intercollegiate Sailing Association/ Gill National Dinghy Championship. The result continued a positive trend for the program. Last year’s women’s team finished 8th at the 2013 national championship in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Camels, who came into the race ranked 16th nationally, topped Harvard University and Brown University in the final standings. Yale University finished first with an overall score of 121 points.

Over the two days of action in the A division, Kevin Martland ’14, Jordan Bothwick ’15, Lea Bushnell ’15, Gabriel Salk ’14 and Grace Medley ’15 scored 187 points, while the B division crew of I.G. Schottlaender ’14, Bryce Kopp ’16, Benjamin Meyers ’15, Kim Bolick ’15 and David Rex ’14 scored 155. The teams’ standings are determined by the combined scores of the divisions, with the championship going to the team with the lowest overall score.

The Camels had an impressive showing in the national semifinals, finishing first out of 18 teams in the East Regatta.
