Its motto is “for the love of music,” and Connecticut College’s radio station lives up to it with an eclectic mix of musical genres and reputation for nurturing local talent.

WCNI-FM, run by community volunteers and students, is highlighted in the April edition of New Haven Living. Dayna McCoubrey ’14, host of the Friday afternoon show “The Alternative Choice,” is featured on the magazine’s cover.

“It was cool enough to be featured in New Haven Living's article, but seeing myself on the cover was especially exciting,” McCoubrey said.  “I was lucky to be rewarded and acknowledged just for doing what I love to do. Here's hoping I get picked up by Rolling Stone next.”

McCoubrey, an English major from Wakefield, Mass., said she enjoys the freedom of variety that her radio show presents. Listeners can expect a wide range of artists and styles, from her favorite Beatles and Meatloaf to newer bands like Arctic Monkeys and the Avett Brothers.

“Every once in a while, I’ll share my thoughts on a particular band or album, but I make sure to keep the talking to a minimum because listeners are tuned in to hear great music, not my voice,” McCoubrey said.

Connecticut College Community Radio owns and manages WCNI, which provides students with multiple opportunities to learn aspects of radio broadcasting and management. On-air personalities include students, faculty and community contributors. WCNI broadcasts on 90.9 FM on local radio and streams online.
