Inaugural C3 Summit will advance diversity to transform college campuses

More than 150 college and university administrators, faculty, post-doctoral fellows and students from across the country will meet at Connecticut College to advance the academy’s progress in diversifying the professorate.

The Inaugural C3 Summit, “Launching Transformation,” is March 28-30. A schedule of events is available at www.C3transformhighered.org.

Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, C3 is a partnership among Connecticut College, Middlebury College, Williams College and the University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, the 20 participating colleges in the Liberal Arts Diversity Officers Consortium (LADO) and the Center for Institutional and Social Change at Columbia Law School. The partnership works to advance diversity among faculty at liberal arts colleges.

Connecticut College Dean of the Faculty Roger Brooks, a national leader in advancing faculty diversity issues and member of C3’s Executive Committee, said he is delighted to host this important summit and is looking forward to the many opportunities for rich discussion and collaboration.

"This summit provides a unique opportunity for students, faculty and administrators to meet peers from across the country, and to share knowledge, experiences and strategies for leading change," Brooks said. "The consortium is particularly devoted to helping undergraduates and graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds advance along the academic pathway, and to building the capacity—particularly through collaboration—for partner institutions to attain their transformative goals."

The summit will include:

  • Workshops and presentations to foster a more inclusive academy
  • Opportunities for graduate students to present some of their current research
  • Presentations from C3 undergraduate internships based on summer 2013 research
  • Structured and informal networking within and across constituencies and institutions
  • Closing Keynote Address by UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski - Sunday, March 30, at 11 a.m.
