Student project makes Tumblr’s Year in Review

A Spring 2014 student project exploring sex and gender was recognized by Tumblr as “the best stuff on the internet from 2014” as part of its Year in Review. Tumblr selects posts based on total volume of posts and tags (original and reblogged), web traffic, follower growth over time, among other criteria.

Gracie Hall ’16, Olivia Rabbitt ’16, Luis Ramos ’16 and Alia Roth ’14 launched On Sex and Gender, a Tumblr site featuring photographs and video, in April 2014. Part of Sociology Professor Afshan Jafar’s “Sex, Gender and Society” class, the project brings attention to micro aggressions, the every-day slights and insults that are commonplace in society. Alexandra Bolles ’13, communications manager at the LGBT media advocacy organization GLAAD wrote about the project for GLAAD’s website, attracting 159,000 notes and the attention of Tumblr.
