A Process of Emphasis: Prints of Robert Motherwell exhibition opens Oct. 14
An exhibition, “A Process of Emphasis: Prints of Robert Motherwell, Works on Paper, 1971-1988,” will open Oct. 14 at the Manwaring Gallery and Gallery 66 in Cummings Arts Center at Connecticut College, and continue through Dec. 9. Made possible by the Dedalus Foundation, the Art Department and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, the exhibition is free and open to the public.
A panel discussion will follow on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 4:15 p.m., in Cummings 308 with a reception to follow from 5:30 to 7 p.m., to which the public is invited. Panelists include Mary Ann Caw of The Graduate Center, CUNY, author of “Robert Motherwell: What Art Holds” and “The Surrealist Look: An Erotics of Encounter”; Catherine Mosely, master printer and Motherwell’s collaborator; and Katy Rogers, Programs Director at The Dedalus Foundation and co-author of “Robert Motherwell Paintings and Collages: A Catalogue Raisonné, 1941-1991.”
The exhibition is co-curated by Timothy McDowell, professor of art, and Sookyoung Lee, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of English.
"This exhibition is an occasion to experience and think through the procedures of printmaking -- combining the techniques of collage, lithography, and etching, to name a few -- as it increasingly captured Motherwell’s imagination in his mid-late career,” said Lee of the exhibition. “Our distinguished panelists will speak to a range of issues, from Motherwell's aesthetics and philosophy to the nature of artistic labor and collaboration, from technical innovation to the legacies of modernism and abstract expressionism.”
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m., when classes are in session. The exhibition will be closed from Nov. 23 to 27 for the College’s Thanksgiving break.
