It’s time to write your college application essay! Naturally you’re trying to decide which of your many life-changing, earth-shattering, mind-blowing experiences to write about in order to wow the admission counselors reading it.

That’s not how it works at Connecticut College.

We don’t expect to be on the edge of our seats as we read essays. We just want you to be yourself in your content and style so we can learn more about you and see a sample of your writing skills. That’s it.

To that end, we’ve compiled a few tips and some of our favorite submissions from students who enrolled at Conn to help as you plan and write your essay!

Step 1.

Allow yourself plenty of time.

Don't wait until the last minute. This sounds absurdly simple, but it really does help if you're not in a rush. That doesn't mean you can't write quickly: You may complete a draft of your essay in 20 minutes. But giving yourself time before application deadlines lets you review and revise until you're satisfied with the outcome.

Step 2.

Choose a topic you care about.

Then the writing will flow more naturally. Your application will be full of information that shows us dimensions of you and your abilities, but only the essay allows you to speak in your own voice about something personally meaningful. As noted above, it doesn’t have to cover a life-changing, earth-shattering or mind-blowing experience, because those are rare. It just needs to be authentically yours.

Step 3.

Let it sit.

Write your first draft, then set it aside. Step away, give your brain a rest, then go back to it later with a fresh perspective.

Step 4.

Ask people you trust for their feedback.

But don't let anyone else tell you how you should write it. This is your story, in your words.

Step 5.

Proofread with care.

When you've revised it to your heart's content, carefully review it before submitting it. Spellcheck isn't always reliable.

Step 6.

Treat yourself!

After you submit your essay, watch your favorite film, cuddle with your pet, take a walk or run—whatever it is that you enjoy. Because you deserve it!
