Conn ranked best college in Connecticut for LGBTQIA students

Connecticut College is the most LGBTQ-friendly college in the state, according to a new ranking by BestColleges.com, which partnered with Campus Pride to find the most positive options for LGBTQ youth in each state.

Conn was recognized for its gender-inclusive housing policies and an LGBTQIA mentoring program for first year and sophomore students to help them transition into academic and dorm life. Conn also boasts an active LGBTQIA community, which hosts many social activities and events, and students can take advantage of the LGBTQIA Center, which offers a supportive space to study, socialize and learn, as well as educational workshops, an extensive library and leadership training sessions.

The ranking highlights the College’s founding as a women's college that has “always embraced diversity in its student body. Today, the New London-based school is regarded as one of the best colleges for LGBTQ students in New England.”

Director of Gender and Sexuality Programs Erin Duran, who directs the LGBTQIA Center, said that the BestColleges.com ranking is an affirmation of the efforts of the entire campus community.

“What really sets us apart is the willingness across the institution to work together to make this a place that is welcoming to LGBTQIA students,” Duran said. “Our students have really creative ideas, and we’ve been able to work with people across campus to make great advances in the most equitable ways.”
