Center for Housing Equity and Opportunity in Eastern Connecticut launches with inaugural gathering at Conn
Danielle Egan, the Fuller-Maathai Professor of Gender, Sexuality and Intersectionality Studies at Connecticut College, has been named dean of the faculty, effective July 1, 2022. The highest-ranking officer after the president, the dean of the faculty is responsible for providing academic leadership for the College and its faculty.
The announcement is the culmination of a comprehensive search process overseen by the Dean of the Faculty Search Committee, which included input from faculty, staff and students.
“As a teacher, Danielle is known for her engaged pedagogy. As a faculty leader, she has been committed to equity and to consensus,” said President Katherine Bergeron in an announcement to the campus community. “[Her] skills and experiences will serve her well as Dean of the Faculty.”
As dean, Egan will provide leadership for the College’s educational mission, support faculty development and ensure the quality of the College curriculum. The dean is responsible for overseeing all academic departments and programs; stewarding the appointment, promotion and tenure of individual faculty members; identifying new chairs and program directors; reviewing the faculty compensation program; and administering the academic budget.
Egan joined Connecticut College’s faculty in 2017. She holds a B.A. in sociology and women’s studies from Goucher College, a Ph.D. in sociology from Boston College, and a Psya.D. in clinical psychoanalysis from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. From 2000 to 2017, she was a member of the faculty of St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where she served as professor of gender and sexuality studies and directed the Center for Teaching and Learning.
During her five years at Conn, Egan has done notable work not only as chair of her department, but also as chair of the Faculty Steering and Conference Committee and, more recently, as a faculty fellow in the Center for Teaching and Learning and co-organizer of the Talking Teaching workshop. Egan’s scholarly research focuses on social constructions of sexuality, and she is the author of three books. The most recent, Becoming Sexual, deals with the sexualization of children and was named book of the week by the Times Higher Education supplement.
