Chap Swap: R.J. Casey ’26 and President Chapdelaine switch roles

R.J. Casey ’26 is no stranger to leadership—he’s one of 43 student-athletes from across the U.S. who serve on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. But on March 3, he took on an even bigger role: President of Connecticut College.

A neuroscience major and American studies minor from Nashville, Tennessee, Casey switched roles with President Andrea Chapdelaine for the day as part of the second annual Connecticut College “Chap Swap.”

“I was interested in participating in Chap Swap because I’ve had a really great time at Conn over the past four years, and a really great last two under President Chapdelaine’s leadership,” Casey said. “So, I was really interested in seeing the behind-the-scenes of how the school operates and how decisions are made.”

Throughout the day, Casey led and participated in Chapdelaine’s student life, finance and senior team meetings, while Chapdelaine attended Casey’s classes, language study and club meetings; ate lunch in the dining hall with Casey and his friends; and even joined Casey and some of his Men’s Basketball teammates for a shoot-around at Conn’s Luce Field House.

Chapdelaine, who began her tenure at Conn in 2024, initially launched Chap Swap at Hood College, where she served as president for nine years.

“It started in a conversation with another college president; we talked about the need to spend time with students and how important and joyous that is in our work—it’s the best part of the job. We brainstormed ideas and we thought, ‘We should just be a student for a day!’ And I’ve been doing it every year since,” she explained.

Now in its second year at Conn, Chap Swap has become one of Chapdelaine’s favorite traditions.

“I can get out of the office; I can spend time with students and really see what their days are like. As a president, it is really important to understand the student perspective and what it’s like to be a Camel here—it helps me learn how to do my job better,” she said.

Casey, who serves as a senior admission fellow at Conn and plans to pursue an MBA after graduation, said he really enjoyed learning more about how the College operates.

“My favorite part of being the president today was going over tons of data with President Chapdelaine and really seeing how she makes decisions with the students coming first in her mind,” he said.
