Conn to build new grandstand, press box at Silfen Field honoring Fran Shields P’14

Connecticut College has begun work on the Fran Shields Grandstand at Silfen Track and Field, with construction expected to be completed in June 2026.

The 500-seat grandstand and press box are made possible by a generous gift from Timothy M. Armstrong ’93 and Nancy A. Armstrong and the Men’s Lacrosse program in honor of Fran Shields P’14, longtime men’s lacrosse coach and athletics director emeritus. The project will greatly enhance the spectator experience for men’s and women’s field athletics and includes ADA-compliant seating. The stadium build-out includes new stairways, improved drainage and upgraded technology to support live broadcasts and event coverage. 

“This project reflects the College’s commitment to providing welcoming spaces that bring our community together,” said Allison Gomes, vice president for college advancement. “We are grateful for the generosity behind this gift and proud to recognize Fran Shields’ lasting impact on Conn athletics.”

Shields retired in 2023 after a 43-year career that reshaped Camel athletics. As men’s lacrosse coach, he led the team to 170 wins, four Top 20 national rankings, an ECAC championship and 12 All-Americans. Later, as athletics director, he oversaw $16 million in facility upgrades, including the Ann and Lee Higdon Fitness Center and the installation of lighting for the turf field and track. Under his leadership, Camel teams improved their win rate against NESCAC opponents, earned more NCAA berths and celebrated the College’s first NESCAC team championship in women’s soccer in 2014.

“This recognition is deeply meaningful,” Shields said. “I’m proud of what Conn has accomplished in athletics and honored to be connected to a project that will support students for years to come.”

Silfen Track and Field is home to Conn track and field, field hockey and lacrosse programs, and it also hosts community and youth events throughout the year. The new grandstand and press box will provide improved sightlines, expanded accessibility and a dedicated media space designed to showcase the energy and spirit of the Conn community.
