For the sixth year in a row, students at Connecticut College have organized the Walk for the Homeless to benefit with New London Homeless Hospitality Center (NLHHC), which provides shelter and support services for hundreds of people in Southeastern Connecticut who need temporary or long-term assistance. The two-mile walk will take place on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m., beginning and ending at 327 Huntington Street.
Before, during and after the walk, participants will enjoy soul food from The General Spot, games, raffles and music from College ensembles like Vox Cameli, CAMP and Miss Conduct." The two-mile walk will pass local landmarks as well as the NLHHC’s shelter at 76 Federal Street and the Day-Time Hospitality Center at 19 Jay Street.
The students who plan the walk are scholars in the certificate program of the College’s Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, a multidisciplinary academic center that advances teaching, learning, research and community collaborations in order to create more just and equitable communities.
“We should all be concerned about the members of our community,” said Telayah Sturdivant ’15, a Holleran Center scholar. “I have learned so much throughout my semester working with the New London Homeless Hospitality Center, and my work with the Holleran Center has given me the opportunity to put theory into action by both studying the structural issues related to poverty and homelessness, as well as possible resolutions. Organizing this event was definitely fulfilling, but I hope more than anything that our work has a positive impact on the center and its visitors. They deserve the best.”
