Award-winning author to discuss Jewish storytelling

Novelist Dara Horn will deliver the 2015 Miriam Kraemer Melrod ’46 Lecture in Judaic Studies on Thursday, April 16, at 4:15 p.m. in Shain Library’s Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room.

Horn has written four acclaimed novels, from which she will draw for her talk, “Technology, Memory, and the Presence of the Past in Jewish Storytelling.” The New York Times review of her latest book, “A Guide for the Perplexed,” noted that “her writing comes from a place of deep knowledge and research.” And a reviewer in the Washington Post wrote, “Horn has always been fond of intricately braided story lines, and this book … interweaves historical and contemporary tales to create intriguing echoes and layers of metaphor.”

“April 16 is Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Dara Horn's talk will offer a fitting way to pause for memory and reflection,” said one of the event organizers, Professor of Philosophy Lawrence Vogel.

Horn has taught courses in Jewish literature and Israeli history at Sarah Lawrence College and City University of New York, and teaches Yiddish and Hebrew literature as the Gerald Weinstock Visiting Professorship in Jewish Studies at Harvard. She was named one of Granta’s Best Young American Novelists, has won two National Jewish Book Awards and was long-listed for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.
