Classical guitar quartet presents lush interpretations of contemporary works

The celebrated Dublin Guitar Quartet, a classical guitar ensemble that plays contemporary classical music, will perform as part of the onStage at Connecticut College series Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Hall.

The quartet’s concerts, described as “explosive, entertaining and completely novel,” feature arrangements of works by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt and other contemporary minimalist composers. Since forming at the Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama in 2002, the group has expanded its repertoire by commissioning entirely new works and adapting modern masterpieces from outside of the guitar repertoire.

Prior to the concert, the group will spend a week on campus working with Connecticut College students. The performers will conduct master classes with classical guitar students of James McNeish, adjunct associate professor of music, and visit music classes, among other educational activities.

In addition to the concert, the members will give a public presentation about their work and background from 11:50 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Evans Hall.

Tickets are $18 for the general public, $16 for seniors and $9 for students. They can be purchased online at onstage.conncoll.edu and at the Palmer Auditorium box office until the night of the show, when they will be available at Evans Hall.

The concert is being presented by the Department of Music and onStage at Connecticut College with funding from the endowed Dayton Artist-in-Residence Program. The Dayton program provides resources for students’ curricular-enhancing exchanges and interactions with professional artists.
