Community invited to Fall Weekend special events

Alumni, parents and friends of Connecticut College return to campus Oct. 5-7 for the annual celebration of Fall Weekend, and the local community is invited to join them for some special events: FRIDAY, OCT. 5 "Q Brothers Shakespeare Project: A Hip Hop Experience"
A hip hop musical developed on campus and directed by performance artists the Q Brothers, loosely based on "Romeo and Juliet." Tickets are $8 for general admission and $6 for students. Call 860-439-2605 for tickets and more information.

Tansill Theater SATURDAY, OCT. 6 "Presidential Transitions: Opportunities and Hazards"
A seminar with Martha Joynt Kumar '63, professor in the department of political science at Towson University and author of several books on the presidency, presidential transitions and the media.

Alumni of Connecticut College will discuss the ways in which a degree in art history or architectural studies prepared them for their careers.

Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library Steel House: Preservation in Progress
Celebrate the preservation of the College's historic steel house. Manufactured by Chicago-based General Houses Inc., the house is a rare example of early prefab housing. It was erected in 1933 for Winslow Ames, the founding director of New London's Lyman Allyn Art Museum, and acquired by the College in 1949. Stop in to learn more about the restoration from faculty and staff involved in the project.

Silfen Auditorium, Bill Hall "The End of the World? 2012 and Beyond"
Eugene Gallagher, the Rosemary Park Professor of Religious Studies, will conduct a class exploring some of the fascinating new religious movements. Beginning with an exploration of the Mayan prophecy, the class will look at a variety of contemporary millennialist movements.

Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library "On Becoming an Educator at Connecticut College: Inspiration Plus Perspiration Equals Transformation"
A keynote speech from William Rose, professor of government and international relations, will address how some people are born teachers while others have to work at it.

John C. Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center Art Faculty Exhibition and Gallery Talk
Featuring works in an array of mediums- including painting, photography, printmaking, videography, sculpture and mixed media - by Connecticut College faculty Andrea Wollensak, Ted Hendrickson, Pamela Marks, Denise Pelletier, Nadav Assor, Chris Barnard and visiting artist Sabrina Marques. The gallery talk will be followed by a reception.

Joanne Toor Cummings Arts Center onStage at Connecticut College presents "Cherish New London" fundraiser with Irish music ensemble Cherish the Ladies
Cherish the Ladies has become an Irish traditional music sensation: the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. With their unique, spectacular blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts it forth in an immensely humorous and entertaining package. Tickets are $28 for general admission, $25 for seniors and $14 for students and can be purchased in advance or at the door. All proceeds will go to the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut to benefit arts organizations in New London. A "Cherish New London" dessert reception at 7 p.m. in Castle Court will precede the performance.
