Concert and jazz bands to perform diverse program
The Connecticut College Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and Traditional Jazz Band will perform a lively assortment of pieces during a multi-group concert on Monday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in Evans Hall. The song selections will provide a sample of the unique musical genres of each group. For example, the Concert Band will perform the five-movement "Façade" by composer William Walton and poet Edith Sitwell. Sitwell's spoken and sung poetry will be provided by lyric soprano Samantha Talmadge, an adjunct instructor. The Traditional Jazz Band will perform instrumental and vocal classic jazz including songs from the early days of Dixieland and Tin Pan Alley as well as the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Thomas "Fats" Waller, three of the pillars of traditional jazz. And the Jazz Ensemble will perform music from the swing era all the way to modern and free jazz. "The program will provide an historical perspective from Duke Ellington's 'Jack the Bear' to Fred Forney's wild 'Laguna Stomp,' with a stopover at a 'Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting' by Charles Mingus, a vocal rendition of Sammy Fain's 'Secret Love,' and even a tuba solo on Toshiko Akiyoshi's 'I Ain't Gonna Ask No More,'" said Gary Buttery, adjunct assistant professor of music and director of the concert band and jazz ensemble. "If you miss this concert, you will have missed hearing the talent that is within our student body here at Connecticut College." Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for seniors and students and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.
