Concerts offer diverse musical offerings this semester

Fall is full of music, as the Connecticut College Department of Music presents 14 concerts this semester. The programs are as varied as the students and faculty performing, so there is something for every taste.

The following are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted:

“Prism: An Ensemble Sampler”
The Connecticut College Chamber Choir, Camel Heard, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Percussion and New Music Ensemble present a varied program directed by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, Assistant Professor of Music and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gunnar Hansen. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

“John Anthony and Friends: Music for Organ & Brass”
The popular Halloween night concert features Professor of Music John Anthony on organ, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery on tuba, and Adjunct Instructor of Music on trumpet. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

“Reclaimed Sounds: A Saxophone Recital”
Adjunct Instructor of Music Joshua Thomas performs works for the concert saxophone and explores preexisting sounds set in a new context, ranging from Greek harmonies in Terzakis's "Der Holle Nacklang I" to the sounds of Eddie Van Halen and Victor Wooten in Schumacher's "Deconstructing" series. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

Handel’s “Messiah”
The Connecticut College Chamber Choir and Orchestra, together with vocal ensemble Camel Heard, present Part 1 and selections from Parts 2 and 3 of Handel’s beloved oratorio, culminating in the “Hallelujah Chorus.” The performance is directed by Assistant Professor of Music Wendy Moy. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

“December Winds With a Touch of Samba”
The Connecticut College Concert Band, joined by members of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Band and directed by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, performs music from American composers Howard Hanson ("Chorale and Alleluia"), Robert W. Smith ("Brazil: Ceremony and Samba"), Alan Silverstri ("The Polar Express"), Anne McGinty ("Kokopelli"), and Leroy Anderson ("The Prodigy" and "Sleigh Ride"). Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors, and free to Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.
