Expert to discuss youth and social injustice
As part of its mission to prepare students for lives of civic engagement and create more just and equitable communities, Connecticut College's Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy is hosting a series of events that offer opportunities for students, faculty, staff and community experts to discuss the pressing issues of our time. The next talk in the Challenges of Our Times Series will be delivered by Michelle Fine on Monday, Feb. 13, at 4:15 p.m. in the Ernst Common Room of Blaustein Humanities Center. Fine is a professor of social psychology, women's studies and urban education at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her work focuses on social justice projects with youth, educators and prisoners. In "Youth Under Siege and the Right to Research," Fine will discuss her findings from several participatory action research projects she has done with youth about what they think of social injustices in schools, communities and prisons. "Her work is particularly relevant in a period of increasing economic, social and political inequities and growing discontent among many of today's youth," said , the director of the Holleran Center and an associate professor of human development. "She's a passionate and engaging speaker who has published several award-winning books on education, reproductive rights, juvenile justice, social justice and qualitative methods."
